All the living and the dead [pop noisy]

French psychedelic lyric band from Poitiers (France). This is what the best webzine in the world, Splendidezine, wrote in 2002 about All the Living and the Dead’s first demo: « All The Living And The Dead are a French group with American and British influences, playing a style made popular by Canadians that ends up sounding Irish. Actually, they don’t sound Irish, exactly; it’s just that ATLATD frontwoman Virginie Lamy’s voice is highly reminiscent of the Cranberries’ Dolores O’Riordan. The band’s vibe isn’t quite so blatantly poppy, however, and if you imagine a different sort of vocalist, it sounds at times rather similar to the « alternative singer/songwriter » genre that includes Alanis Morisette and Sarah McLachlan. Lamy professes a debt to Tori Amos as well, and the influence is especially evident on the piano-driven songs such as the beautiful « Lonely Wolf » and intense « Beauty My ». PJ Harvey is also cited as a role model, and her darker, percussive style is evident on my own favorite track, « Excuse Me », which features a nervous driving beat and the most intense singing on the disc. Siegfried Burgeot deserves mention for the drums on this track, which help create the mood with a subdued intensity that’s hard to pull off ».
